KVIC Launches Modernization Drive for Arunachal's Ancient Monpa Handmade Paper

Mar 23, 2026

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has initiated a targeted program to modernize and revitalize the traditional Monpa handmade paper craft in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. This effort aims to enhance the productivity and market reach of artisans while preserving the unique cultural heritage of the region's paper-making tradition, as reported by The Sentinel.

The Monpa community's handmade paper, known for its distinct texture and durability, is a centuries-old craft with significant cultural value. However, the industry has faced challenges from mechanized production and limited market access. KVIC's intervention focuses on introducing contemporary tools and techniques to improve efficiency without compromising the artisanal essence of the product.

Key components of the modernization push include providing upgraded machinery, organizing skill development workshops, and establishing better linkages with national and international markets. The commission also plans to assist in creating a standardized branding strategy to protect the craft's authenticity and geographical indication status.

This initiative is expected to generate sustainable livelihood opportunities for local artisans, particularly women, and prevent the decline of this intangible cultural heritage. By blending tradition with technology, KVIC hopes to position Monpa paper as a premium, eco-friendly product in the global handicraft segment.

The project underscores a growing trend of government-backed efforts to support village industries in Northeast India, ensuring that traditional skills remain economically viable for future generations while contributing to the region's socio-economic development.
